What Do Osteopaths Treat?

Osteopathy is a system of diagnosis and treatment tailored to each individual patient, and therefore osteopathy can be of help for people of all ages from newborn babies to the elderly and everyone in between, including pregnant women and new mums.

Osteopathy is based on the premise that a person’s health and well-being is dependent on good musculoskeletal (skeleton and connective tissue) function, and that given optimal health, the body can heal itself.  Treatment therefore aims to alleviate muscle tension, improve joint mobility, and enhance circulation and nerve function, thereby restoring the body to a state of balance.

Osteopathic treatment is holistic, aiming to treat the patient, not just the symptoms.  Osteopaths tailor each treatment to the individual patient and their requirements.

Osteopaths have a diverse range of techniques to choose from to best suit each patient.  These include massage, mobilisation, manipulation and cranial osteopathy.  In addition, osteopaths frequently provide patients with ways to continue to help themselves at home such as providing simple exercises or hydrotherapy, or ways to simply modify their workstation or daily tasks.

Cranial osteopathy is a very gentle and very effective form of treatment that can assist in releasing tension and stress throughout the body, including the head.  The gentle nature of cranial osteopathy makes it safe and suitable for people of all ages, including newborns.
